On March 19, 2023, Nexa3D announced the acquisition of the SLS technology portfolio from Taiwanese company XYZ Printing. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Under the agreement, Nexa3D integrated XYZ Printing’s technology, distribution, and services related to SLS 3D printers into its operations. Meanwhile, XYZ Printing itself was phased out. Unfortunately, in December last year, Nexa3D also scaled down their operations, and since then, there has been complete silence regarding the company.
After finalizing the acquisition, the MfgPro230 xS and MfgPro236 xS SLS 3D printers were added to Nexa3D’s product lineup, which already included its proprietary QLS 820 system, launched in 2022. XYZ Printing’s SLS 3D printers were known for producing durable polymer components with excellent mechanical and thermal properties, while also allowing the use of third-party materials. These machines were highly regarded for their outstanding price-to-performance ratio.
The MfgPro236 xS featured a 21-hour cycle time, a 60W laser, and 0.2 mm accuracy, making it an affordable yet efficient SLS solution. Meanwhile, the MfgPro230 xS was designed for high-strength, durable parts, often used in prototyping. It offered a 24-hour cycle time and a 30W laser. A wide range of compatible materials included PA11, PA12, PBT, and PP, as well as TPU88 and TPU75. Both systems were also compatible with cold-melted materials such as titanium and steel.
XYZ Printing had an incredibly colorful history, once being an absolute leader in the desktop 3D printing market (both FFF and DLP). At one point, it had the largest portfolio of machines worldwide. In 2017, the company expanded into the industrial segment, offering the aforementioned SLS systems, as well as Binder Jetting based on powder-bed technology. Despite initial industry skepticism (as desktop 3D printers were not considered cutting-edge at the time), XYZ Printing’s industrial machines proved to be an excellent budget-friendly choice, maintaining high production quality.
For Nexa3D, incorporating a proven SLS technology into its portfolio was also a strategic move, considering that the QLS 820 system (originating from startup NXT Factory) never achieved the market success it was expected to.
Unfortunately, at this point, all signs indicate that the original XYZ Printing SLS technology may finally be laid to rest, as Nexa3D continues to drifting operationally…
