06-20-2019: Desktop Metal started shipping Studio System 3D printers to Europe
Studio System was advertised as „the world’s first office-friendly metal 3D printing system”
On June 20, 2019, Desktop Metal - then still emerging startup in the field of metal 3D printing, announced that it has received CE certification for its debut 3D printer - the Studio System, and is starting to ship it to Europe.
Studio System was advertised as „the world’s first office-friendly metal 3D printing system” designed for functional prototyping and low volume production. In reality, it was a 3D printer based on extrusion technology, where the material was a composite of plastic and metal of a given type. After 3D printing the parts, they had to be debinded and sintered to obtain the final form.
Unfortunately, during the post-processing stage, they shrank and changed their size significantly, which forced parts to be designed in advance to anticipate and take this into account.
Studio System consisted of three elements - 3D printer, debinder and furnace, as well as Desktop Metal’s cloud-based software to deliver a seamless workflow for printing parts in-house - from digital file to sintered part. The technology has met with adoption in North America among such companies as Ford, Stanley Black and Decker, Google’s ATAP, Goodyear, or Owens Corning.
It also started a new direction of development for many companies manufacturing FDM/FFF 3D printers to use similar materials and processes in their products. The followers included, among others: MakerBot, Ultimaker, Raise3D, BCN3D, Zortrax or 3DGence.
