06-24-2016: Markforged introduced Onyx
Onyx is Markforged' flagship, high-performance 3D printing filament, which soon became the basis of its material offering
On June 24, 2016, Markforged introduced Onyx – a new type of nylon enriched with micro carbon fibers, which gave 3D printed elements exceptional stiffness, strength and resistance to high temperatures.
The material was designed to work with the Mark Two Enterprise 3D printer and featured an aesthetic, matte black finish. Onyx was three times stiffer than regular nylon filaments and had a heat deflection temperature of 145°C.
Onyx hit the market shortly after the premiere of the second generation of Markforged 3D printers – the Mark Two. It was quite an innovative solution for its time, combining engineering nylon with micro carbon fibers, which offered not only exceptional strength but also aesthetics.
Onyx became a key material in Markforged's offering due to its high strength, resistance to wear and aesthetic surface finish. The dimensional stability of Onyx allowed for 3D printing of large, complex structures without the risk of deformation.
