06-25-2014: Materialise debuted on NASDAQ
The initial public offering was priced at $12 per share
On June 25, 2014, Materialise’s CEO Wilfried Vancraen rang the opening bell for the NASDAQ stock exchange, and the company’s shares began trading for the very first time. The initial public offering was priced at $12 per share, with a total of 8 million American Depositary Shares issued.
Materialise is one of the most important companies in the global 3D printing industry. It was founded in June 1990 by Vancraen and his wife Hilde Ingelaere as one of the first Rapid Prototyping service bureaus in Europe.
However, the company achieved a much more important thing in 1992, when it began mapping human anatomy digitally in three dimensions, using sliced CT image data. This formed the basis for the first medical image processing software – Mimics, and later its industrial variant – Magics. Both programs became the foundation for additive manufacturing.
As for the company's career on NASDAQ, it was mixed... After debuting at $12, the price remained at a lower level of $7-8 per share for the next few years. A significant price rebound occurred in mid-2017, to reach an absolute peak of $82 in January 2021.
