06-28-2016: Zortrax revealed M300 – an enlarged version of the flagship M200 model
The premiere took place during the AM Europe trade fair in the Netherlands
On June 28, 2016, during the AM Europe trade fair in the Netherlands, Zortrax held a rather unexpected and surprising premiere of the Zortrax M300 – a scaled-up version of its flagship 3D printer – the M200.
The Zortrax M300 was based on the same design as the smaller M200 model, but introduced a few improvements. One of them were new, larger filament spools with a smart preview of consumption level. It was also equipped with 3D printing chamber covers and slightly redesigned extruder. The 3D printer was initially compatible with four types of filaments: Z-ULTRAT, Z-HIPS, Z-GLASS – a material that partially transmited light, and Z-PETG.
Zortrax launched the M300 at a time when everyone was waiting for the Inventure model to start shipping. Inventure supposed to be a "super desktop 3D printer" - a small version of Stratasys industrial-grade machines. In reality, Inventure turned out to be incredibly problematic and failure-prone (as I wrote in one of the earlier posts in the series). The M300 was intended to repair the company's reputation and show that it could still deliver high-quality 3D printers.
The Zortrax M300 was not groundbreaking in any way, but was very solid. It was perfect for maintaining long, several dozen-hour prints. It was like a good delivery truck - not very spectacular, but effective and reliable.
Today, with hindsight, we can say that if Zortrax had decided to launch the M300 model after the premiere of the excellent M200 and had not gotten involved in the development of the Inventure, its future could have looked much better…
