07-15-2015: Stratasys completed the acquisition of Solid Concepts
It was one of the longest-running AM companies in the world, and was the foundation for Stratasys Direct.
On July 15, 2015, Stratasys announced the completion of its previously disclosed acquisition of Solid Concepts. The acquisition was announced four months earlier, along with the acquisition of another company – Harvest Technologies. Both were then combined with RedEye to establish one additive manufacturing services business unit – Stratasys Direct. This unit operated successfully for the next 9 years until it was sold in 2023 to Lamarjean Group, doing business as PolyCraft Tech.
California-based Solid Concepts has been providing additive manufacturing solutions since 1991. The company was created to provide rapid prototyping and production solutions for customers.
Despite such a rich and respected history, the company became widely known in November 2013 when it presented the world's first 3D-printed metal gun. It was a classic marketing stunt with little practical value, but very effective.
In addition to 3D printing, the company offered CNC machines and QuantumCast – its flagship urethane product, which created strong and stable pre-production and short-run production components.
In September 2023, Stratasys Direct – the on-demand parts service bureau of Stratasys, created from Solid Concepts, Harvest Technologies, and RedEye, was sold to Lamarjean Group. The decision was driven by a new strategy to optimize and consolidate the company's operational activities.
