05-08-2017: Formlabs launched the Form Wash and Form Cure
The first proprietary post-processing stations for resin 3D prints
On May 8, 2017, Formlabs unveiled two debut post-processing devices — an automatic washer and a UV curing chamber. The launch took place at the RAPID + TCT conference in Pittsburgh. Both devices were designed to complement the Form 2 ecosystem, with the Form Wash replacing the original manual cleaning kit.
The Form Wash was an automatic washer that used isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove uncured resin from prints. It was equipped with a stirring system, a hygrometer, and a tool storage compartment. The Form Cure was one of the first desktop-grade curing stations, offering control over light wavelength (405 nm), temperature, and exposure time to optimize the mechanical properties of materials — especially engineering, casting, and biocompatible resins.
Though relatively simple, these devices marked a significant step forward in professionalizing and automating the workflow around Formlabs 3D printers. The default cleaning process at the time involved two plastic containers and a strainer, requiring manual work from the user and exposing them to unpleasant and unhealthy IPA fumes (often mixed with resin residues). In this respect, the Form Wash was a game changer — it greatly sped up and simplified the workflow.
Form Cure, on the other hand, enabled the expansion of Formlabs' resin portfolio, particularly in the medical field. Certain medical resins required additional post-curing to acquire key properties such as biocompatibility. The curing process also increased the strength of parts printed with standard resins.
A fun fact: both devices included a hidden Easter egg — an Arkanoid-style game that could be activated by entering a specific knob-turning sequence. The game launched on the display after turning the knob three ticks clockwise, six counterclockwise, seven clockwise, and six counterclockwise. The 3-6-7-6 combo corresponded to the word “FORM” on a numeric keypad.
