10-06-2022: Seurat Technologies announced the signing of three Letters of Intent (LOI) from global manufacturers for 25 tons of 3D-printed metal parts
The orders exceeded the existing factory capacity
On October 6, 2022, Seurat announced that customer demand for 25 tons of 3D-printed metal parts had exceeded the capacity of their factory. The applications spanned various industries, including tooling, energy, and transportation in the industrial sector. The company signed LOIs accumulating to 25 tons of metal parts, which required expansion into additional full-scale production facilities.
Seurat planned to use its proprietary 3D printing technology, Area Printing, which relied on what the company calls Optically Addressed Light Valves (OLAVs) to direct two million points of light onto a bed of metal powder.
Seurat Technologies was founded by James DeMuth, who worked on advanced manufacturing technologies at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The inspiration to establish the company in 2015 came from the need for a faster and more efficient method of 3D metal printing, which could replace traditional, slow welding methods. Seurat developed Area Printing technology, based on laser projection, enabling the simultaneous melting of entire layers of metal powder, significantly speeding up production compared to Powder Bed Fusion (PBF).
Seurat emphasized scalability and sustainability, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions and transportation costs through local on-demand production. The company planed to build production centers near customers, significantly lowering logistics costs.
Area Printing, developed by Seurat Technologies, is an advanced 3D metal printing method that utilizes laser sintering of metal powders. Its innovation lies in the use of a wide laser beam that melts entire areas of metal powder simultaneously. In Area Printing, each "pixel" within the laser area can operate independently, allowing for precise control of parameters such as radiation intensity and heating or cooling rates.
