Yes, I believe variability is already well enough understood to be codified - but only within a properly defined process, supported by good software. Top manufacturers are already implementing real-time SPC based on in-process sensor data. The issue is no longer the physics, but the closed software of the machines.
Once manufacturers open up their interfaces, codifying the process will become standard.
